Morkin woke, confused and bewildered. Light hurt his eyes as he blinked in the brightness. He couldn’t remember where he was or what had happened, his mind raced with panic for long moments before he remembered his quest.

Mountains, the chase, the dead Doomguard …

His memory shifted and blurred, there was something else.

The skulkrin!

Morkin sat up and looked about him. Snow fell from his clothing. He was half buried. It was lucky he was wearing his thick leather tunic and furs. If he’d been exposed, he might have died from the cold and never woken up.

No sign of the creature. It had been almost nightfall when he’d met the skulkrin. Now it was dawn. How had he fallen asleep? For how long too? He racked his brain trying to remember.

Fawkrin … threw something in my face. A powder!

The creature had tricked him, what was it after?

The answer was obvious. Morkin turned to see his backpack lying in the snow behind him. He grabbed it searching through the contents. The map was there, along with his knives and camping equipment.

But food and water … stolen!

Morkin knew he had to eat a certain amount of food each day. Travelling in the cold of Midnight burnt energy fast. If you didn’t eat, you died. It was that simple. Your strength would fail and the cold would take you. Untold numbers of travellers had been lost over hundreds of moons. Everyone knew the danger, you packed provisions for your journey and made sure you never strayed too far from villages and keeps.

But out here.

He pulled out the map, his fingers already chilled.

The nearest village was behind him in the Mountains of Dodrak, but he’d already been there and it had seemed abandoned, plus it was on the wrong side of the mountains. Next was far ahead in the Downs of Mirrow, at least two days hard march away. There was nothing to the south that he could reach, and that would delay his quest intolerably. Lothoril, and the Fey of that realm, were even further north.

If he didn’t make the Village of Mirrow, he would die.

Unless …

The skulkrin had his provisions. Perhaps he could track the creature down and recover them.

How fast can a skulkrin travel?

He didn’t know. Without his horse he would have to pursue on foot.

A few minutes of careful investigation showed him the tracks of the skulkrin, the snow had yet to completely cover the small prints. It would not be easy, but it might be his best chance. The footprints led north anyway, in the general direction of Mirrow, so he wouldn’t be losing much regardless.

North it is then.

Morkin shivered, but hoisted his lightened backpack and began the trudge through the snow.
